What is a Bitcoin taproot address and how does it work?

Taproot is Bitcoin's most significant protocol upgrade in years, changing how addresses are constructed and how transactions are validated. Here's what the shift means for everyday users.

A Bitcoin Taproot address is a new address format that arrived with the Taproot upgrade, which activated on the Bitcoin network in November 2021. If you've started using a modern Bitcoin wallet in the past couple of years, there's a good chance you've already received one without realising it. Taproot addresses look different from older formats, behave differently under the hood, and bring meaningful improvements to privacy, transaction size, and the flexibility of what Bitcoin can do.

What Taproot actually changed

Bitcoin has had several address formats over its life. The original P2PKH addresses begin with a "1". Wrapped SegWit addresses begin with a "3". Native SegWit (also called bech32) addresses begin with "bc1q". Taproot introduces a fourth format: bech32m addresses that begin with "bc1p". That lowercase "p" is the tell.

The change isn't cosmetic. Taproot bundles three separate improvements into a single upgrade.

  • Schnorr signatures: Taproot replaces the older ECDSA signing algorithm with Schnorr signatures, which are smaller and faster to verify. As the site's explainer on Bitcoin Schnorr signatures covers in detail, this also makes multi-party signing far more efficient, because multiple signers can combine their keys into a single signature that looks identical to a single-party transaction.
  • MAST (Merkelised Alternative Script Trees): MAST lets a transaction commit to multiple spending conditions simultaneously, but only reveal the condition that was actually used at settlement time. The conditions that weren't triggered stay private.
  • Tapscript: A revised scripting language that makes it easier to add new smart contract conditions to Bitcoin in the future, without breaking existing rules.

Why the privacy improvement matters

Before Taproot, a multi-signature wallet looked visibly different on the blockchain from a regular single-key wallet. Anyone scanning the public ledger could tell that a transaction came from a 2-of-3 multisig setup, for instance, which reveals something about the spending arrangement even if it doesn't identify the people involved.

Taproot collapses that distinction. When all signing parties cooperate (the "key path" spend), the transaction looks exactly like an ordinary single-key payment. The complex spending script underneath becomes invisible. Only if the cooperative path fails and a fallback condition is triggered (the "script path" spend) does any additional complexity appear on-chain. For most everyday transactions, nobody watching the blockchain can distinguish a Taproot multisig from a simple payment. That's a genuine privacy win, not a theoretical one.

It matters for businesses too. A company running a 3-of-5 treasury setup no longer broadcasts its internal governance structure to the world every time it moves funds.

How Taproot addresses are constructed

A Taproot address encodes a Taproot output key, which is a combination of a public key and an optional Merkle root of spending conditions. In the simplest case (no script conditions at all), the Taproot output key is just a tweaked version of the signer's public key. The bech32m encoding used by Taproot addresses is a refinement of the bech32 encoding used by native SegWit. It fixes a subtle weakness in bech32 where a small number of character substitution errors could go undetected. That's a minor but real improvement in error resistance when you're copying an address by hand.

Do you need to do anything differently as a beginner?

Mostly, no. Sending Bitcoin to a Taproot address works the same way you'd send to any other address. The steps in a standard send flow don't change. Receiving Bitcoin at a Taproot address also requires no special action from you as the recipient.

The main practical consideration is wallet support. Not every wallet generated Taproot addresses from day one. Most major wallets added Taproot support between late 2021 and 2023. If your wallet is reasonably up to date, it likely supports Taproot already. If you're on an older app that still generates "bc1q" addresses by default, check the settings: many wallets let you choose your address type, and switching to Taproot (bc1p) is usually a single menu option.

One thing worth knowing: sending from an older wallet to a Taproot address is fine. The address format only determines how the recipient's funds are locked, not how the sender's wallet signs. Compatibility issues only arise on the receiving side, and virtually all current software handles Taproot outputs without trouble.

Fee savings from Taproot

Schnorr signatures are roughly 11% smaller than equivalent ECDSA signatures. For a single-key transaction that saving is modest, but for complex scripts (Lightning channel closes, multi-signature wallets, time-locked contracts) the size reduction is more pronounced. Smaller transaction sizes translate directly into lower fees when the mempool is busy, because Bitcoin fees are priced per byte of data. The saving won't change your life on a small transaction, but it adds up for high-frequency users and businesses.

Taproot and the Lightning Network

Taproot's biggest long-term impact may be on second-layer systems. Lightning Network channels can now open and close with Taproot outputs, which hides the fact that a channel exists at all when it's cooperatively closed. The on-chain footprint of a Lightning transaction becomes indistinguishable from an ordinary payment. That's a step toward making Lightning usage more private, which benefits the whole ecosystem as adoption grows.
