How to safely use a VPN with Bitcoin

A VPN can add a meaningful layer of privacy to your Bitcoin activity, but it's not a silver bullet. Here's how to use one correctly and what to watch out for.

A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is one of the most misunderstood tools in a Bitcoin holder's security kit. Used correctly, it hides your internet traffic from your ISP and anyone on the same network. Used incorrectly, or over-trusted, it can create a false sense of security that leaves real gaps. This guide explains what a VPN actually does for your Bitcoin privacy, how to choose one, and where it can't help you.

What a VPN does (and doesn't do)

A VPN encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a server in a location of your choosing. For Bitcoin users, this matters in two specific ways. First, it prevents your ISP from seeing that you're connecting to a Bitcoin exchange or node. Second, it shields your traffic from anyone else on the same network, which is critical on public Wi-Fi. What a VPN does not do is anonymise your Bitcoin transactions. The Bitcoin blockchain is public. Every transaction you broadcast is visible to anyone running a node. A VPN hides your IP address from the network, but it doesn't sever the link between your on-chain activity and your identity if you've already connected your wallet to a KYC exchange or shared your address publicly.

The VPN provider itself also sees your traffic. You're shifting trust from your ISP to that provider. That's only a win if the provider is more trustworthy and has a credible no-logs policy.

Choosing a VPN for Bitcoin use

Not all VPNs are built the same. These are the criteria that matter for Bitcoin holders specifically.

  • No-logs policy, independently audited. A policy is just a claim unless a third party has verified it. Look for providers that have published results from independent audits of their logging practices.
  • No payment link back to you. Paying for a VPN with a credit card ties the account to your identity. Pay with Bitcoin or a privacy-focused method where possible.
  • Kill switch. If the VPN connection drops, a kill switch cuts your internet immediately, preventing your real IP from leaking to an exchange or wallet node.
  • Jurisdiction matters. Providers based in countries with strong data-retention laws or intelligence-sharing agreements (the Five Eyes, Nine Eyes, Fourteen Eyes alliances) carry more legal risk of being compelled to hand over data.

Mullvad VPN is a well-regarded option in the Bitcoin community. It accepts Bitcoin payments, enforces a strict no-logs policy with published audits, and doesn't require an email address to sign up. That's a concrete starting point rather than a vague recommendation.

When to use your VPN

Run your VPN whenever you're doing any of the following: logging into a Bitcoin exchange, checking your wallet balance through a web interface, broadcasting a transaction, or using a Bitcoin ATM that requires you to interact with a platform on your phone. The threat model for each is slightly different, but the common factor is that your IP address is being logged somewhere, and a VPN reduces the richness of that data.

At home on your own connection, a VPN still adds value if you don't want your ISP building a profile of your crypto activity. Australian ISPs are required under the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 to retain certain metadata for two years. That metadata can include the IP addresses of services you connect to. A VPN breaks that chain.

What a VPN can't protect you from

This is where many users get into trouble. A VPN is a network privacy tool. It does nothing to protect you from the following.

Clipboard hijacking. Malware that replaces a copied Bitcoin address with an attacker's address operates entirely within your device. The VPN tunnel doesn't see it. Phishing sites. A VPN routes your traffic to a fake exchange just as efficiently as it routes it to the real one. If you click a malicious link, the VPN provides zero protection.

Compromised wallets or exchanges. If the service you're using has been breached, your activity at that service is exposed regardless of how your traffic arrived.

On-chain tracing. Blockchain analytics firms like Chainalysis trace transaction graphs, not IP addresses. Your VPN doesn't touch this. If your coins can be linked to your identity through an exchange withdrawal, a VPN can't undo that link.

VPNs and running a Bitcoin node

If you run a full Bitcoin node at home, your IP address is visible to every peer your node connects to. This is a real privacy exposure that a VPN can partially address. Routing your node's traffic through a VPN prevents your home IP from being publicly associated with a Bitcoin node. A more robust option is to run the node over Tor, but a VPN is a simpler first step for most people.

Be aware that some exchanges and services actively block or flag VPN IP addresses. If you're trading and hit a block, you may need to temporarily disable the VPN to complete identity verification steps, then reconnect for routine activity.

Combining a VPN with other security layers

A VPN works best as one layer in a stack, not as a standalone solution. Pair it with two-factor authentication on every exchange account, a hardware wallet for any meaningful Bitcoin holdings, and careful address verification before every send. Network privacy and device security solve different problems, and you need both.
