How to safely use Bitcoin on a shared home network

Most Bitcoin security advice focuses on wallets and exchanges, but the home network you share with flatmates, family, or visitors is a serious weak point. Here's what to do about it.

Most Bitcoin security conversations start at the wallet and end at the exchange. But the network carrying your traffic sits underneath all of it, and a poorly secured home router can expose your activity, your credentials, and ultimately your funds. A shared home network with flatmates, visiting family, or casual guests adds another layer of risk that most holders don't think about until something goes wrong.

Why a shared network is different from a public one

Public Wi-Fi gets most of the attention when people talk about Bitcoin network risks, and that concern is justified. But your home network isn't automatically safe just because it's private. Every device connected to the same router can potentially see the other devices on that network. A compromised laptop belonging to a flatmate, or a smart TV running outdated firmware, can become an entry point for an attacker targeting the same subnet.

Home networks also tend to stay on default settings for years. The router your ISP installed probably still uses a generic admin password, has UPnP enabled, and may not have received a firmware update since the day it was provisioned. That's a meaningful attack surface sitting between you and the internet.

Segment your network with a separate VLAN or guest network

The single most effective step is putting your Bitcoin activity on a separate network segment so that other devices can't reach it directly. Most modern home routers support a guest network, which is a separate SSID that isolates connected devices from each other and from the main LAN. Use your main network exclusively for the device you use for Bitcoin, and push everything else onto the guest network.

If your router supports VLANs (most mid-range and above models do), a VLAN gives you even more control. You can assign your Bitcoin device to one VLAN and your smart home gear, gaming consoles, and shared household devices to another. Traffic between VLANs is blocked unless you explicitly allow it.

The practical benefit is straightforward. A piece of malware on a flatmate's laptop can't reach your Bitcoin wallet software if it's on a separate VLAN. It can't intercept your traffic, enumerate your open ports, or attempt a local network attack. Network segmentation doesn't stop every threat, but it eliminates the whole category of lateral movement attacks.

Harden the router itself

Your router is the gateway everything passes through. It deserves the same attention you'd give to your wallet.

  • Change the default admin username and password immediately, using a long, unique credential you store in a password manager.
  • Disable remote management so the admin interface is only accessible from inside your home network.
  • Turn off UPnP, which allows devices to punch their own holes through the firewall without your knowledge.
  • Check for firmware updates and set a calendar reminder to do it every 3 months. Router manufacturers release patches for real vulnerabilities, and most people never apply them.

WPA3 encryption is worth enabling if your router and devices support it. WPA2 is still acceptable, but WPA3 closes a class of offline dictionary attacks that WPA2 is vulnerable to. If your router only supports WPA or WEP, it needs to be replaced.

Be careful about what you access on shared devices

Even if you've segmented the network correctly, you still need to be disciplined about which device you use for Bitcoin. A device shared with others in the household is not a suitable device for accessing your exchange account or wallet software. Keyloggers, browser extensions, and cached credentials don't respect network boundaries because they operate at the device level, not the network level.

Dedicate one device to your Bitcoin activity. Ideally it's a machine that doesn't get used for general browsing, file downloads, or social media. If a dedicated device isn't practical, at minimum use a separate browser profile with no extensions installed, and never save your credentials in the browser. Protecting your Bitcoin from hackers means thinking about both the network path and the endpoint at the same time.

Use a VPN on your Bitcoin device

A VPN encrypts your traffic before it leaves your device, so even if someone on the same physical network intercepts packets, they can't read the contents. It also masks your DNS queries, which would otherwise reveal which exchanges or wallet services you're connecting to. Choose a VPN provider with a verified no-logs policy and a kill switch that cuts internet access if the VPN connection drops, to prevent accidental exposure.

A VPN doesn't replace network segmentation. It's an additional layer that protects your traffic even in scenarios where segmentation has failed or hasn't been set up properly. Run both if you can.

Manage guest access deliberately

Handing out your Wi-Fi password to every visitor effectively expands your network to include every device they carry. A guest's phone might be compromised without their knowledge. Their IoT devices may be running firmware from 2019 with unpatched vulnerabilities.

If you have a guest network set up (which you should), give guests access to that and nothing else. Rotate the guest password periodically. Don't share the main network password with anyone outside your permanent household, and be selective even there.

For occasional visitors, consider enabling a time-limited access feature if your router supports it. Some models let you create temporary credentials that expire automatically after a set number of hours or days.

Monitor your network for unexpected devices

Most routers have a connected devices list in the admin interface. Check it occasionally. If you see a device you don't recognise, that's worth investigating before assuming it's harmless. A device you don't control on your network is a potential vector, and the fact that it's using your bandwidth is the least of your concerns.

Some routers and network management apps will alert you when a new device connects. That kind of real-time visibility is useful, especially in a shared household where someone might give out the Wi-Fi password without telling you.

Combine network security with proper seed phrase protection

Network security reduces the risk of someone stealing credentials or intercepting traffic. It doesn't protect you if your seed phrase is compromised at the storage level. A thorough approach to Bitcoin security addresses both. How you store your seed phrase matters just as much as how you secure the network your wallet software runs on. One layer without the other leaves a gap.

A shared home network is a manageable risk, not an impossible one. Segmenting your devices, hardening the router, restricting guest access, and dedicating a clean device to your Bitcoin activity will close the most common attack paths without requiring specialist hardware or networking expertise.
